Introduction

The goal of these projects is to familiarize you with the topic extensions which occur in THE CAY . Most authors talk about Universal Themes in novels. All Novels have themes and to learn more about this please click the picture below.

Technology Integration and E-Portfolios Page

The following projects are to be completed by researching the Internet. You and your partner are to research one full page (typed) and report on the topic orally to your class. You will have three research classes and three typing classes to do this.

Choose one of the following projects to complete for Chapters One to Three

 

Activity 1

Make a map of Phillip's Caribbean home from salt dough.

Place a map of the Caribbean on a piece of hard plastic or cardboard. Cover the different countries and islands with different colors of salt dough.[below] Cover the sea with blue. Let this dry overnight. Label with a fine tipped marker.

To make salt dough mix equal 3 cups of plain flour to 1 cup of salt. Add approximately 1 cup of warm water. Mix until you have a dough that is neither crumbly or sticky. To make the dough different colors add food coloring to the water before mixing it with the flour and salt.

Be sure to include these places mentioned in The Cay.

Activity 1

Draw pictures of German submarines,a U-Boat, or ship from World War II. Hand these in. You should have one of each.

 Did you ever Play the game Battleship? Play it for fun.

Activity 2

Learn what the culture is like in Curaçao. Listen to music of the Caribbean, especially steel drums. Write several paragraphs describing your reactions to this music. Tell how it compares to the music you like to listen to. Describe the similarities and differences.

Learn about surviving on a life raft. Write a report about this.

Play a survival game. Hand in your write up and drawings from this game.

Activity 1

Learn about head injuries. Write a three page report after visiting this site and the site below.

     When you injure your head symptoms may occur immediately or develop over several hours. A large number of symptoms may occur including  unconsciousness, bleeding, slowed breathing, confusion, convulsions, drainage from the nose, mouth or ears, severe headaches, personality changes, restlessness, slurred speech, swelling, vision problems, or vomiting.

     You should call for medical assistance if the injured person losses consciousness, if there is severe bleeding, a neck injury, or problems with breathing.
