How to Organize

The purpose or goal I have set for my workshop is to make students aware of the Elements of a Novel and help them gain confidence in their writing, by teaching them the SevenTraits of writing.

I have divided Reader’s/Writer's Workshop into three parts. First - independent reading and writing activities, Second- literature focus strategy lessons and third Read Alouds for the teacher or Share Alouds for students.  These parts provide a structured framework for the Workshop.  Within this framework, further structure is provided by the basic procedures that apply to whichever task the student is involved in, and by assessment which includes, observation and conferencing, goal-setting, time management, and skill assessment through strategy lessons.  As teachers we continue to track student progress through small group teaching, student reflection, and skill or independent tasks (We are testing for comprehension, fluency and individual reflection on written word).

 Class Room

  • Books are in bins in the bookshelves. Each bin is marked either Fiction or Non-Fiction. The Genre or type of book is marked above the category or Fiction/non-fiction. Please pay close attention to the wall charts listing all books in each bin. When you are choosing a book it is your job to put it back in the right bin by looking at the wall chart.
  • On the side bulletin board you will see folders under the titles Reader's and some under Writer's. In these folders you will find strategies that help you become better readers and writers. Please use these during the workshop.
  • You will also see placed around the room various reading/ writing charts that will help you as you work on tasks. Use these often to find out if you are understanding what you read and following conventions when you write.
